Educational Sail

5:00 - 7:00 pm
meet at Kalmar Nyckel Shipyard @ 4:45 pm
At the Kalmar Nyckel Shipyard on Seventh Street

When the ship is not visiting other ports she resides at the Kalmar Nyckel Shipyard on the Christina River in her homeport in Wilmington. The Kalmar Nyckel's construction, launching, and crew training all took place in our Shipyard, a location literally next door to the original Kalmar Nyckel landing site. A visit to our Shipyard reveals glimpses into the ancient art of ship making and into the colonial history of Delaware. Our newly completed Sail Loft Museum is a hands-on documentation of the Kalmar Nyckel's history, craftsmanship, and dedicated supporters. The Shipyard also includes a Blacksmith Shop and Gift Shop.

As many of you know, I have joined the crew of the Kalmar Nyckel (Delaware’s tall ship). Lately, I have been crewing on 1 ½ hour educational sails that we have been doing for school groups. The kids seem to have a really good time and learn a bit of history plus some of what it takes to sail a replica of a 1638 ship.

The other day, I asked one of the educators about the program and if it is available to Scout groups. He said that it is available and costs $15 per person regardless of age. The minimum number of people is 30 and the maximum number is 49. This is substantially lower than the normal cost of a sail and an educational opportunity is offered. Parents and siblings are welcome as well as anyone else that we wish to invite (like Weblos).

Sails would be from 5:00-6:30. Cost is $15.00 for every participant. Ship can hold up to 42 kids, we need at least 6 adults and max passengers is 49.
